Screen Savers

I've always liked looking at screen savers, especially the old Windows 98 ones. Ever since I started working with Flash and ActionScript I've changed the way I see those old screen savers and now I can't help but imagine how I would recreate them.

I'm thinking of creating a few small components in ActionScript3 to sell on those component sites like FlashDen.net and FlashComponents.net
I wouldn't really be doing it for the money it could make me (10oz would be getting the money anyways), but for the experience and the recognition such things get you.

My other thought, and this really is just for me, is to make a short video tutorial series on getting started with ActionScript 3 and how to avoid programming like an idiot (or a designer). I imagine each video being about 20-30 minutes long and looking similar to the videos at GotoAndLearn.com

If anyone has any ideas or comments on this stuff, let me know. Also, if you have a cool idea for a flash experiment, I would love to hear it. I've even enabled comments on this post just for YOU!

Water Effect in ActionScript 3

Today I took yesterday's experiment a step farther. The above Flash movie loads an image (given in the query string) and applies the ripple effect as both an additive layer (for brightness) and a displacement filter giving us a nice watery looking effect.

The above Flash Movie is only 2KBs and is easily adjustable to any size or resolution (although I can't guarantee performance at large sizes).

This experiment was something I did on the spur of the moment today because I thought it would be an interesting challenge. It uses a grid of points with amplitudes and creates ripples in the grid. Then I draw the grid to a Bitmap object.

All of this was done with my own custom code with no external libraries other then the default ones in Flash.

Working with NetPlus Marketing I created a flash timeline/gallery that is powered by XML.

For this project I was given a PhotoShop PSD with layers and was told how the gallery should work. Over some quick iterations we finished this project and got it on the client's site on a tight deadline (the new site is not yet live as of this posting).

This experiment was inspired by Dan Gries "RGB Sinks and Springs" and uses his code as a base. Dan Gries has done some awesome stuff and I just had to try it out for myself.

Rebecca Minkoff Handbags Flash Site

Working with a designer in Los Angeles, CA, I built a full flash site for Rebecca Minkoff, a handbag designer.

The site includes an XML powered flash gallery splash intro page.
A second XML image gallery on the main home page.
More galleries to show off her seasonal collections.
Galleries, more galleries and more galleries, all of which have dynamic content through loaded XML files.

Poptent Video and Music Player

In the past few months, I've been working with the JW Player, customizing it for flexible media uploading and playback. The player is customized for my client, Poptent, a social network for freelance and profressional commercial video makers.

During this development, I created the user experience in a custom video and media player including:

applied a custom skin
added a credit system that links out to user profiles
added the ability to switch to a High-Definition video version if available
updated the video to display slow motion when dragging the scrubber
added visualizers for music playback (there are 3 visualizers available, but I believe only 1 is implemented currently)

Physics in ActionScript 3: Box2DFlashAS3

This was my first experiment in trying to work with someone else's code. Box2D is an amazing engine and I still admire. It is very well written code. In this ClickPop tutorial, I outlined the basic documentation for the engine and showed how to work through the "Hello World" example shown below.

My friends and I worked on the initial design and development of a website for the company ReplyForAll.com which helps users promote their chosen cause. I've tried to embed the signature here which would normally go in your e-mails, but as you can see, the styling has gotten a little messed up in the transition.

ReplyForAll.com has a large database of users and statistics that we had to develop. There is also an extensive control-panel for the site's administrators to view, track, and export those statistics.

Collision Detection and Game Design in ActionScript 3

I started writing a series of tutorials on making a simple game like Asteroids. Clearly I never finished, but I'm not sure if I ever intended to. I wanted the reader to take the next step without me to see if anyone would. If anyone did, they never let me know :(

Cool Rollover Effects with Filters in ActionScript 3

Above is a little example menu I made for another tutorial I wrote on Filter Effects. Don't expect a game to start when you click on the Play button. Instead, when you click a button you will get a little menu to change the rollover effects of said button.

Spring Animation with ActionScript 3 Controls

I made this game/animation using my friends Spring Time vector pack. I wrote a short tutorial on the process of making the game as well.

You can press the Left or Right arrows to control the little bunny. This was just for fun because my friend wanted to see someone use his vectors for something.

There is music with this game, but you can pause or stop it with the buttons in the bottom left corner.

Looking back on this one brings back some good memories. My coding technique has changed dramatically (for the better I would think) since I wrote this.
